TMA
Founder-led specialist energy data and technology business, expanding through acquisition, operating in energy data and managed services (data collection, metering, settlement and compliance for GB energy suppliers and intermediaries).
A brand and positioning platform helped TMA move from a specialist known quietly within the energy market to a recognised assurance partner for one of the GB market’s largest regulatory transitions. Revenue grew 20% in the year the platform launched, from £18.7m to £22.4m, a £3.7m increase against a campaign investment a fraction of that size.
The challenge
This was The Leap. TMA had spent nearly four decades building deep technical and regulatory expertise as an energy data and managed services provider, but that reputation lived in individual relationships rather than in the TMA brand itself. As the business moved to absorb acquisitions, launch new services and enter new markets, including a new secondary route through third-party intermediaries and, via Auditel, direct to corporate energy users, it needed a market-facing story that could travel with it, not one confined to the suppliers who already knew the team personally.
The timing sharpened the stakes. The GB energy market was moving through Market-wide half-hourly settlement, a compulsory change affecting an estimated 33 million meters and driving a tenfold increase in data volumes for the segment TMA serves. Competitors could describe individual services, process or compliance. TMA had the opportunity to claim broader territory, the integration of metering, data, carbon analytics and automation, but only if its market story caught up with what the business had actually become: not a software provider, but a scalable technology company.
Partnering with the team helped us move from being a business known quietly by the market to one with a clearer, more professional and more confident presence. The work has supported sales conversations, internal alignment and the next stage of our growth strategy. It is more than a brand refresh; it is a platform for commercial momentum.”
Our approach
We worked with TMA’s senior team to build a brand and positioning platform strong enough to carry the business through acquisition, market entry and a regulatory transition at the same time, and we did it by reversing the usual brand-building sequence.
Rather than starting with a broad market message and pushing it down into sales conversations, we started with individual account insight, profiling target suppliers by size, portfolio complexity, MHHS readiness, settlement performance and connectivity challenges. Aggregating the patterns across those profiles surfaced the conversations suppliers were actually having: settlement performance, data connectivity, compliance confidence, operational control and market readiness. Those patterns, not a generic brand brief, shaped the platform.
The result was Power through data, with Total Market Assurance as the behavioural motto beneath it: a way of describing what TMA does and how it behaves, built to flex across supplier, TPI and corporate audiences without fragmenting into separate stories. We aligned brand strategy, messaging, visual identity, sales enablement, thought leadership, events and internal communication around it, and worked directly with TMA’s senior leadership on how to carry that story themselves, in board conversations, on stage at industry events and inside the acquisition integration process, rather than leaving it as a marketing document. For a business whose expertise had always lived in relationships more than in its name, that mentorship mattered as much as the platform itself.
The results
The impact in numbers
- Revenue grew 20%, from £18.7m in FY24 to £22.4m in FY25, a £3.7m increase, against a campaign investment of under £100,000.
- Headcount grew to 82 on official records, with LinkedIn-listed employee data showing 19% year-on-year growth and 32% growth over two years, evidence of scaling capability while retaining market expertise through the acquisition and integration period.
- TMA repositioned from a technical delivery partner to a recognised assurance partner for Market-wide half-hourly settlement, the transition affecting an estimated 33 million meters across the GB market.
- Stronger, more consistent account engagement across suppliers, third-party intermediaries, who manage roughly 70% of industrial and commercial metering contracts, and, through Auditel, a network of over 100 franchise consultants and an additional 12,000–15,000 meter points.
- The platform is built to extend as the market matures beyond the initial MHHS transition, supporting an ambition to double revenue within three years through carbon reporting, flexibility and forecasting services. [Confirm current progress against this ambition if available]
“The team helped us turn decades of technical expertise into a brand platform that feels clear, confident and commercially useful. They understood the complexity of our market and gave us a way to explain TMA’s value with much more impact. Power through data and Total Market Assurance now give our teams a shared language for customer conversations, product development and growth.
